Newbery helped Ripon's men's team finish eighth at the 13-team Grinnell Pioneer Invite over the weekend. He placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.54, which is just 0.10 seconds shy of the school record. He also finished third in the 100 freestyle (48.44) and fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.93). Newbery was also part of Ripon's fourth-place 400 freestyle relay, and helped Ripon finish sixth in the 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays and eighth in the 400 medley relay.
