Frank Smoll lettered for three years in both basketball and baseball at Ripon College. He served as the starting point guard for the basketball team and was elected team captain in 1963, helping the team win the Midwest Conference Championship. On the baseball team, Smoll played shortstop in every inning of every game for three years. He was part of the 1962 and 1963 Midwest Conference championship baseball teams. With a three-year batting average of .338, Smoll received All-Conference honorable mention during his junior and senior years.
