Dayle Balliett received Ripon’s first S.N. Pickard award, given to the student “who has made the most significant contribution to Ripon College through scholarship, athletic achievement and personal character.” Playing right tackle on the football team, Balliett won three straight football letters in his career at Ripon. The 1939 Crimson described his talent as having “a habit of breaking through opponents’ lines at critical moments, often to block a punt or nail a ball-carrier for a loss.” In basketball, Balliett was a consistent starter. He played guard, helping his team win the Midwest Conference Championship in 1939. For his junior and senior years, he was chosen for the All-Midwest basketball team. During his senior year, he received the additional honor of being elected Ripon’s team captain.
