Although Lud Wurtz was also a member of the Ripon golf team, he will always be remembered for his contributions on the Redmen basketball team. It was on February 17, 1978 against Lake Forest College when Wurtz drove full court and in a graceful lay-up, totaled more in his four year career than any other player in Ripon College history to that point. Wurtz broke the record that his coach K.G. “Doc” Weiske had set from 1946-50. Tallying 697 points during the 1977-78 season, Wurtz set the single-season points record at Ripon College that still stands today. Wurtz had a total of 1,327 points in his career at Ripon College and averaged nearly 28 points per game as he finished as a leading scorer in NCAA Division-III competition.
