Walter “Jibo” Wittman was a versatile athlete playing end on the Redmen football team and forward on the basketball team. He also was a well-rounded track and field man for Ripon. Wittman was a member of the Ripon rifle team, which was highlighted with a victory over the University of Michigan. In 1945-46, he earned four letters for all his sports team involvement. Beyond his Ripon contributions, Wittman went on to have a fine coaching career after graduation. Both Waupaca and Green Bay East high schools benefited from his abilities and in 1954, he was named the first “Coach of the Year” for the Fox Valley Conference.
