Box Score RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon women's soccer team extended their winning streak to four games Sunday afternoon, defeating Monmouth College 3-2 in double overtime. The Red Hawks, who have six wins by at least four goals to their credit this season, proved they are able to win in a few different ways, battling back from a 2-1 second half deficit.
In the early going, things looked like they would come easy for the Red Hawks (8-3-0, 4-1-0 MWC), as
Brandi Peltier scored her team-leading 12th goal of the year just 35 seconds into the contest thanks to an assist by
Paige Birschbach.
After entering halftime with a 1-0 advantage, the Red Hawks' lead would quickly disappear as Monmouth (2-9-0, 1-3-0 MWC) scored two goals (Kelsi Smith and Darice Brooks) in the first 14 minutes of the second period. Two and a half minutes later, Ripon's
Kaylee Tadych tied the score at two with her sixth goal of the season.
The two teams played the final 29 minutes of regulation evenly, sending Ripon to its first overtime game of the season. After no one scored in the first OT, Tadych took matters into her own hands in the second and final OT, ending the game with her second goal of the game and seventh of the season just two minutes into the period on an assist from
Alyssa Kennedy.
Both Goal Keepers played all 102 minutes.
Sidney Blodgett made 10 saves for the Red Hawks, while Nicole Neagle made eight for Monmouth.
With the win, Ripon remains in second place in the Midwest Conference standings, as they continue their quest for a berth in the 2014 MWC Tournament. The Red Hawks' next game will be next Sunday at Illinois College, which is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
