Ripon Picks Up First Win of the Year

Playing their first home match of the 2015 season Thursday afternoon, the Ripon College women's tennis team earned their first victory of the year, defeating MSOE by a score of 7-2. The Red Hawks won five of the six singles matches, while also taking two of the three doubles matches.

"Everyone on the team played excellent tactical matches to push their opponents to the max," Ripon Head Coach Jim Borell said. "They played aggressively and hit the ball well.",

In singles play, Courtney Olsen and Morgan Makar were victorious at the third and fourth flight, respectively, by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Maddie VandenHouten was also dominant at the top flight, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Lucero Pena and Samantha Kiesner were victors at the number two and five flights.

VandenHouten and Makar teamed up in doubles play to win the top flight by a score of 8-6. Kiesner and Carly Wesner also notched a doubles victory, winning at the third flight, 8-4.

The Red Hawks will try for another win on September 10 against Lawrence University in what will be their first conference match of the season. That match will begin at 4 p.m. at Larson Courts in Ripon.
