RIPON, Wis. - Ranked fifth in the NCAA Division-III North Region, the Ripon women's soccer team experienced their closest call of the season Wednesday afternoon, defeating Beloit College 5-4 to remain unbeaten with an 11-0-1 record, which is the best start to a season in program history. The Red Hawks trailed by a goal late in the second half, when freshman
Abbie Maule came up clutch with two goals in the game's final 10 minutes to give Ripon the victory.
The Red Hawks (11-0-1, 3-0-1 MWC) looked like they may run away with the game early, sporting a 3-1 halftime lead.
Morgan Johnson scored Ripon's first two goals, while
Paige Pierce netted the other, her ninth of the season, on an assist from
Claire Schaible.
It didn't take long before Beloit (3-6-0, 1-3-0 MWC) tied things up, scoring a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Hanna Metcalfe then gave Beloit their first lead of the game on a breakaway goal in the 66th minute. That's where the score would stay until the 81st minute when Maule took a pass from
Paige Birschbach and clanked in a shot off the upper right post to tie the game. Five minutes later, Maule took a Free Kick off the crossbar and in for her third goal of the season, but none more memorable than that game-winner.
Ripon out-shot Beloit 22-10 in the game, while also holding a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Sunday when they'll travel to Bethany Lutheran College. That game will begin at Noon in Mankato, Minn.
