RIPON, Wis. - Playing under the lights of Ingalls Field Tuesday night, Ripon's men's soccer team defeated Finlandia 3-2 in overtime. Ripon scored the first two goals, before Finlandia tied it in the second half, only to see Ripon win the game early in the extra period.
Ripon (5-11-1) got the scoring started early with a
Jacob Oppeneer goal off an assist from
Tim Geocaris just seven and a half minutes into the game.
Alex Casarez would add another goal in the 29th minute to double the Red Hawks' lead.
After leading 2-0 at halftime, Ripon saw that lead disappear in the second half on a pair of Mohamed Koroma goals, the second of which tied the score in the 75th minute. That set the stage for
Esteban Borja Pena's heroics, as he took a pass from Oppeneer just two minutes into the extra frame and scored the game-winning goal to send the Red Hawks faithful home happy.
Both Goal Keepers played the entire game. Ripon's
Kalan Narance recorded four saves, while Hunter Ross saved five shots for Finlandia (6-10-0).
Ripon will jump back into conference play on Saturday when they'll travel to Grinnell, Iowa to battle Grinnell College. That game will begin at 1:30 p.m.
