RIPON, Wisconsin – The Ripon women's soccer program ended its 2023 campaign with a shutout, defeating Mount Mary 5-0 on a snowy Tuesday at Hopp Stadium.
The shutout was the ninth of the season for Ripon (8-6-3), breaking a seven-year school record for single-season shutouts. The Red Hawks gave up only 13 goals all season, also tying a school record for the fewest goals allowed in a season with the 1997 team.
2023 was the best season in nearly a decade for Ripon women's soccer as the Red Hawks collected their most wins since 2017 (10).
After peppering Mount Mary (4-11) constantly throughout the first half, the Red Hawks broke through near halftime.
Rebecca Roszel found
Kaley Kowal near the middle of the pitch and the senior fired a shot past the Blue Angels' keeper to give Ripon a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute. This was her team-high 10th goal of the season.
The second half was all Red Hawks as Ripon found the back of the net four more times. Just two minutes after the start of the second stanza, Roszel added a goal to her name, scoring after the ball bounced around near the goal for her fourth goal of the season.
Just 10 minutes later, in the 57th minute,
Jessi Griepentrog scored the second goal of her rookie campaign after another scrum near the net, making it 3-0 Ripon.
After getting fouled in the box,
Alyssa Klementzos made the most of her penalty kick attempt, shooting and scoring for Ripon's fourth goal. This was Klementzos' third goal of the season – and second off of a penalty kick.
With less than a minute remaining in the match,
Jadyn Johnson scored the first goal of her collegiate career to finish Ripon's season out in style and put the exclamation point on another shutout.
Ripon had a season-high 33 shots, with 20 of those on target. The Blue Angels were held to just 3 shots and only 1 on goal. Klementzos had a match-high 9 shots, while Griepentrog chipped in 7 and Kowal had 6.
With 1 save on Tuesday and 118 in 2023, goalkeeper
Andreanna Wilke now stands alone in second place in Ripon school history for career saves with 486. Next season, she'll be looking to break a 26-year-old record for career saves, as Allison Jackson had 508 in the mid-90s. On Tuesday, she also tied a school record with 7 complete-game shutouts in a single season.
