RIPON, Wis. -- The Ripon College women's soccer team battled Wisconsin Lutheran College Thursday evening in its home opener at Hopp Stadium, falling 2-0. The Red Hawks move to 1-1-0 on the season following the setback.
Ripon worked to create opportunities throughout the opening half, with senior Rebecca Roszel (Fremont, Calif., Irvington HS) recording an early shot for the Red Hawks. The Red Hawks continued to compete defensively, with sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlan Adkins (Milwaukee, Wis., Brown Deer HS) making four saves during the contest. Wisconsin Lutheran managed to find the back of the net twice in the opening half, taking a 2-0 advantage into the break.
The Red Hawks came out of halftime with increased offensive pressure, registering seven of their nine shots in the second half. Roszel led the way with three total shots, including two on goal, while sophomore Lizzy Schmitz (Sheboygan, Wis., Sheboygan Lutheran HS) and senior Jadyn Johnson (Seymour, Wis., Seymour Community HS) each recorded two shots. Freshman Sammy Nampel (St. Germain, Wis., Northland Pines HS) also put a shot on target, while freshman Diem Bonness (Luxemburg, Wis., Luxemburg-Casco HS) and senior Alyssa Klementzos (Salem, Wis., Westosha Central HS) added attempts for Ripon.
Ripon continued to pressure the Warriors late in the match, earning three second-half corner kicks and putting multiple shots on frame. Roszel had another attempt saved in the 77th minute, while Johnson forced another save in the 84th minute.
The Red Hawks will look to bounce back Saturday, Sept 12, when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., to face Grace Christian University. Kickoff is scheduled for 9am.
