RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks forced 36 turnovers Wednesday night, while holding Lawrence to just 32 percent (15-47) shooting, en route to a 43-37 conference-opening victory over the Vikings. Ripon shot 40 percent (16-40) from the field and despite committing 31 turnovers of their own, defeated Lawrence for the 11th consecutive time.
The score changed hands a couple times in the opening minutes, before Ripon ended the half on a 12-6 run for a 21-11 halftime lead. The Red Hawks held Lawrence to just 20 percent (4-20) shooting in the period, while converting 35 percent (7-20) of their field goals.
The second half saw Ripon maintain a double-digit lead for much of the first 17 minutes, leading by as many as 14. The Red Hawks final field goal of the game came on a Jill Van Eperen jumper with three minutes to play, giving them an 11-point advantage. Lawrence ended the game on a 6-1 run, but time ran out on their comeback bid.
Twelve of the 13 players that appeared in the game for the Red Hawks scored at least one point. Kacie Cullen led the team in both points and rebounds with 11 and six, respectively. Van Eperen added six points, three rebounds and three assists, while Erin Lind recorded a team-best three steals. Freshman Miranda Gunderson added five points and two steals in 15 minutes off the bench.
Lawrence saw just five players score at least one point in the game. They were led by 12 points from Amber Lisowe. Alex Deshler added 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Jessica Robins finished with six points and a game-high four steals.
Ripon will try for their second consecutive conference victory on Saturday when they'll travel to Grinnell College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa and can be seen live on
