WAUKESHA, Wis. - One game after recording their worst-shooting performance of the season, the Ripon women's basketball team experienced their best-shooting performance of the year, but it still resulted in defeat as the Red Hawks lost to Carroll University, 69-58. Ripon converted 48 percent (23-48) of their shots, including 83 percent (5-6) from 3-point range, but shot just 41 percent (7-17) from the free throw line.
Carroll (4-4, 3-2 MWC) scored the first four points of the game, but Ripon (3-5, 2-3 MWC) would score 19 of the next 22, taking a 12 point lead on an Erin Lind layup with 13 minutes left in the first half. In what was a game of runs, Carroll got right back in the contest, scoring the next nine points. After Ripon took an 11-point lead later in the half, Carroll went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to three with under two minutes in the period. Sia Gonyo would connect on a 3-pointer just before halftime, giving Ripon a six-point lead at the break.
The Red Hawks would lead for the first six minutes of the second half until a jumper by Emily DeNoyer gave Carroll a one point lead. After the lead shifted hands several times, Kelly Van Berkel gave Ripon a one point lead with seven and a half minutes to play when she converted a four-point play. One minute later, Carroll took the lead for good on a jumper by Nicolette Rini. The Pioneers were able to preserve that lead by making 78 percent (25-32) of their free throws, including all eight of their attempts in the final two minutes.
Lind led the Red Hawks with her fifth double-double of the season and third in the last four games, as she posted team-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Van Berkel added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Jill Van Eperen scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Gonyo chipped in with seven points, four rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Carroll shot 41 percent (20-49) in the game. They were led by Kelly Menden's 19 points. Corrine Engels added 17 points in 23 minutes off the bench, while Malory Christenson added nine points.
