WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - Ripon dropped their fifth game in a row Friday night, losing to UW-Stevens Point 55-44 in the second day of the Wisconsin Dells Tournament. The Red Hawks turned the ball over 28 times, while UW-Stevens Point committed just 16 miscues. Ripon's turnovers led to 19 Pointer points.
The Red Hawks (3-8) held their own early on, taking an 8-6 lead on a Jill Van Eperen layup six minutes into the contest. UW-Stevens Point (8-3) then took control with an 18-6 run in the next 13 minutes. A three point play by Van Eperen in the final minute of the half pulled Ripon to within seven at intermission.
Brooke Allen opened the second half with a three pointer for the Pointers, giving them a 10-point advantage. That lead would stay in double digits for much of the next 14 minutes. Ripon would rally late however, going on a 14-3 run to cut UW-Stevens Point's lead from 16 to five with just under three minutes remaining. That's as close as the Red Hawks would get, as the Pointers scored the next two baskets and made five of their final six free throws to ice the game.
Ripon shot 36 percent (16-44) in the game, but missed all 10 of their 3-point attempts. Van Eperen and Erin Lind led the Red Hawks with 14 points and four rebounds apiece, while Van Eperen added a game-high four assists. Kacie Cullen chipped in with six points and six rebounds.
The Pointers were led by Liz Althoff's 17 points, seven rebounds and five steals off the bench. Sam Barber added 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Allen scored eight points, as she made two of her three 3-point attempts. UW-Stevens Point shot 32 percent (18-57) from the field and 56 percent (15-27) from the free throw line.
Ripon will now resume conference play, as they'll travel to Lake Forest College on January 2. That game will begin at 3 p.m. in Lake Forest, Ill.
