LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Despite shooting a season-best 48 percent (26-for-54) from the field Wednesday night, the Ripon women's basketball team dropped its sixth consecutive game with a 67-63 overtime loss to Lake Forest College. The Red Hawks also turned the ball over a season-high 34 times, which led to more than half (39) of Lake Forest's points.
Ripon (3-9, 2-5 MWC) didn't miss many shots in the first half, making 61 percent (14-for-23) of their field goals. The lead was close throughout, changing hands five times, in addition to two ties. With Ripon leading 6-5 early in the game, Lake Forest (5-6, 3-3 MWC) went on an 14-4 run to take their largest lead of nine points. Ripon then battled back with a 23-8 run to end the half and take a 33-27 lead into halftime. That run was keyed by nine points from freshman Morgan Johnson, who finished with 11 in the first half.
The second half saw Ripon retain their lead for the first six minutes, until Lake Forest took a two-point advantage on a jumper by K.C. Stralka. The lead then began to change hands several times again, before Ripon took a five point lead with five and a half minutes remaining. The Foresters would answer with eight consecutive points in the next minute and a half to take a three-point advantage, but Ripon stormed back to tie the game at 57 with just under one minute to play. Two Lake Forest free throws put them in front again, before Erin Lind tied the game for the eighth time on a layup with 15 seconds to play, sending the game into overtime.
In that extra period, Lake Forest struck first, scoring the first six points of overtime. Ripon would cut that lead in half with two and a half minutes to play, but the Foresters iced the game with a free throw in the final seconds.
Lind and Morgan Johnson both scored a team-high 17 points. That marks a career-high for Johnson, to go along with another career-best eight rebounds (five offensive). Lind added a team-high 11 rebounds, giving her 16 career double-doubles, seven of which have come this season. Jill Van Eperen also chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals.
Lake Forest was led by Liz Radtke's 18 points, 10 of which came at the free throw line. Gina Ambrose added 17 points, including four 3-pointers, off the bench, while Abby Wiedman scored 10 points in a reserve role.
Ripon will be back at the friendly confines of Wyman Gymnasium in Storzer Center on Saturday, where they have won two of their three games this season. They will try to improve on that home record when they welcome Knox College to town. That game will begin at 3 p.m. and can be seen live on
