RIPON, Wis. - In a game Ripon needed to win in order to improve their chances at grabbing a spot in the end of the season Midwest Conference Tournament, the Red Hawks lost to Carroll University Tuesday night, 67-49. Ripon didn't do themselves any favors, turning the ball over 30 times and converting just 55 percent (6-11) of their free throws.
The game was close early, as the two teams played to a 15-15 tie in the first 11 minutes. Carroll (9-7, 8-5 MWC) then proceeded to score 10 unanswered points, which was the beginning of a 16-2 run to end the half. The Red Hawks (8-11, 7-7 MWC) made just one of their final eight shots in the half, while Carroll made 6-of-13 shots in that same span.
The second half saw Carroll take their largest lead of 22 points on a pair of Emily DeNoyer free throws with under five minutes remaining. Ripon never stopped competing however, going on a 15-4 run during the next two and a half minutes to cut the lead in half. That would be as close as Ripon would get however, as Carroll finished the game on a 10-3 run.
Ripon was led by Jill Van Eperen and Erin Lind, who each recorded 11 points and five rebounds, while combining to shoot 9-for-16 (56 percent) from the field. Sia Gonyo and Brittany Johnson each added seven points, while Gonyo also posted team-highs of six assists and four steals. The Red Hawks shot 40 percent (20-50) for the game.
Hilary Arthur led Carroll with 24 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Malory Christenson added 14 points and five boards. DeNoyer added nine points, while Kelly Menden scored six, while adding a game-high seven steals. The Pioneers shot 50 percent (19-38) from the field and 67 percent (26-39) from the free throw line.
