RIPON, Wis. - Carroll University entered Friday's match with Ripon without a loss in Midwest Conference play this season. They left with their first MWC blemish of 2013, as the Red Hawks defeated Carroll in four sets (19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 27-25) to snap a six-match losing streak to the Pioneers. The victory also moves Ripon into a second-place tie with the Pioneers in the MWC standings with six of their 10 conference matches still to play.
"Tonight's win was a great one for our program," Ripon Head Coach Katie Astrauskas said. "The girls channeled their frustrations from Tuesday's loss to Lawrence and used that in a positive way against Carroll. They worked hard for the win.
Friday's match was an emotional rollercoaster for both Ripon (11-12, 3-1 MWC) and Carroll (13-10, 3-1 MWC), featuring 33 ties and 14 lead changes in the four sets combined. The first and third sets each saw six lead changes apiece, while Ripon rallied from a 19-12 deficit in the fourth set to score 15 of the match's final 21 points to earn the victory.
Senior
Karlye Wehner led all players with a career-high 22 kills and a team-best hitting percentage of .232, while also finishing second on the team with 16 digs.
Allison Barnes added 15 kills, while
Emily Gary posted nine kills and a hitting percentage of .227, while also registering a team-high four blocks (two solo).
Abbi Williamson once again led the team with 39 assists, while
Brianne Milroy recorded a team-best 22 digs.
Wylie Gahart finished with a match-high three service aces, with her biggest one coming on the final point of the game.
"Karlye Wehner really stepped up tonight by showing the younger girls how to work around the block, and to swing aggressively, even against a bigger front line," Astrauskas said. "She did not back down and was a great example to the rest of the team."
The Red Hawks will try to keep their momentum going next Friday at home against Knox College. That match will begin at 7 p.m. at Storzer Center's Wyman Gymnasium and can be seen live on
