GRINNELL, Iowa - Ripon rebounded nicely from Friday's loss to 22nd-ranked Cornell with a four-set victory over Grinnell College on Saturday. The Red Hawks lost the first set 14-25, but won the final three (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) to earn the fourth victory in their last five matches.
The Red Hawks (14-13, 6-2 MWC) recorded double digit kills in all but the first set. They were led by
Emily Gary's season-high 20 kills, which is the second-highest single match total of her career. Gary also recorded two service aces and nine blocks (three solo), which ties a career-high.
Karlye Wehner added 11 kills and 17 digs, while
Paige Buddenhagen and
Kelli Walsh posted eight and six kills, respectively.
Abbi Williamson led the team with 33 assists, to go along with 17 digs, while
Brianne Milroy recorded a team-high 22 digs.
Grinnell (3-24, 3-6 MWC) was led by 14 kills and 13 digs by Claire Weidman. Olivia Fromm and Natalie Duncombe added 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while Evelyn Weidman registered the Pioneers' only three service aces.
With the win, Ripon is now just one-half game out of second place in the Midwest Conference standings. The Red Hawks will take on second-place St. Norbert College Tuesday in Ripon at 7 p.m. That match will also double as Ripon's "Spooky In Storzer" event in which fans can have an opportunity to win prizes for wearing the best Halloween costume to the match.
