MONMOUTH, Ill. - Playing their first intercollegiate match in 21 days, the Ripon College tennis team didn't miss a beat, defeating Monmouth College 6-3 on Saturday in what was the first of two matches. The Red Hawks didn't fare as well in their second match of the day, losing to St. Ambrose, 9-0.
Against Monmouth (0-12), the Red Hawks (2-9) won two of their three doubles matches, while winning four of the six matches in singles play.
Elizabeth Ake and
Madeline VandenHouten were victorious at the number one doubles flight by an 8-6 score, while
Lucero Pena and
Maura Slattery teamed up for an 8-4 victory at number three doubles. Ake and Vanden Houten were also victorious in their singles matches. Ake won 6-2, 6-2 at the number one flight, while VandenHouten won 6-4, 6-2 at the second flight.
Madeleine Salzer also gave Ripon a team point with a singles victory, winning at the number four flight by a score of 6-4, 6-4. Slattery also took care of business with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in number six singles.
Ripon's second match of the day proved to be more difficult. The Red Hawks lost all three doubles matches to St. Ambrose (4-5) by a combined score of 24-9. They also lost all six singles matches, with each of them coming in straight sets.
Those two matches were Ripon's final tune up before the 2013 Midwest Conference Championships, which will take place on October 19 and 20 at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis.
