THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran shot over 55 percent from the field in both halves of Sunday's game against Ripon, defeating the Red Hawks 82-65 in what was day one of the two day Thrivent Financial Tournament. Ripon never held the lead thanks in part to Cal Lutheran's 56 percent (31-55) shooting from the field and 94 percent (17-18) shooting from the free throw line.
Cal Lutheran (9-1) scored the first four points of the game, but Ripon (5-4) stayed within striking distance for the first several minutes. Leading 11-9 with 14 minutes left in the opening period, Cal Lutheran scored 14 consecutive points in the next five minutes to take a 16-point lead. Ripon cut that lead to six on a 3-pointer by Ty Ketz later in the half, but Cal Lutheran would take a 10-point lead into halftime.
The second half saw Cal Lutheran lead by double digits until the 10 minute mark when a Justin Leistikow layup cut the lead to nine. The Red Hawks would get within four points on a Kyle Loughrin jumper with five minutes remaining, but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way, as Cal Lutheran ended the game on a 20-7 run.
Ty Sabin led the Red Hawks with 21 points off the bench, with 13 coming in the second half. Brad Brooks added 10 points, while Ketz and Leistikow scored nine and eight, respectively. Ripon shot 39 percent (9-23) from the field in the first half, but improved in the second period, shooting 45 percent (14-31).
Cal Lutheran was led by 21 points and five rebounds from Corey Quintana. Arik Smith added 18 points, four rebounds, seven assists and three steals, while Coltrane Powdrill chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals and three blocked shots.
Ripon will conclude their trip to California on Monday when they'll face Otterbein University at 8 p.m. Central Time in the second and final day of the Thrivent Financial Tournament in Thousand Oaks, Calif. That game can be seen live at
