RIPON, Wis. -
The last time Ripon's volleyball team defeated St. Norbert College, George W. Bush was still in his first term as President of the United States. That all changed on Friday night, as the Red Hawks defeated SNC in four sets, 25-23, 14-25, 25-18, 25-13, snapping a 13-match losing streak to the Green Knights that dates back to the 2004 season. That was the bright spot in the first day of the Ripon Invitational Tournament that saw Ripon finish 1-1, as they opened the day with a three-set loss to Lakeland College.

Against Lakeland (7-6), the Muskies were in control the majority of the time, as there were only four lead changes in the contest. The Red Hawks (8-9) were led by Emily Gary, who tied for a match-high 10 kills, to go along with three blocks (one solo). Karlye Wehner added nine kills and a team-best 11 digs, while Paige Buddenhagen and Abbi Williamson each recorded four kills. Williamson also posted a team-high 18 assists to go along with 10 digs.

In Ripon's second match of the day, against St. Norbert, there were 15 ties and nine lead changes. Seven of those lead changes came in the first set alone. St. Norbert then led the second set from start to finish, while the final two sets featured just one lead change apiece. Against the Green Knights, Ripon received an outstanding performance from Wehner, who set a career-high with 20 kills to lead the Red Hawks, while also finishing second on the team with 15 digs. Gary added 17 kills and three blocks (one solo), while Williamson and Maddie Koster each finished with six kills. Kelli Walsh led the team with three blocks (two solo) and Williamson set a career-high with 48 assists.

The Red Hawks will try to build on that huge victory on Saturday when they'll play matches against both St. Mary's (Minn.) and Concordia (Wis.) at Noon and 2 p.m., respectively. Those matches will again be played at Wyman Gymnasium in Ripon.
