Ripon Suffers First Loss of 2013

Box Score

DePERE, Wis. -
Ripon fell behind St. Norbert early on Saturday afternoon and could never fully recover, losing to the Green Knights 33-6 to suffer their first loss of the season. Despite the lopsided score, the Red Hawks were only outgained 285-210 in total offense. The difference in the game turned out to be two Ripon interceptions and a blocked punt, which SNC turned into 20 second quarter points.

St. Norbert (2-1, 2-0 MWC) opened the scoring with just under three minutes to play in the opening quarter, as Brad Boockmeier found pay dirt from one yard out. They would score a second touchdown early in the second quarter, capitalizing on a blocked punt and turning it into a five-play, 23-yard drive that culminated in a two yard touchdown pass from James Tringali to Patrick Burke. The Green Knights would score again five minutes later when Boockmeier scored again on a 51-yard touchdown recpetion, capitalizing on a Ripon interception two plays earlier. The Red Hawks threw a second INT later in the quarter, which St. Norbert turned into a two-play, one-yard drive that was capped off by a one-yard TD plunge by Tringali, giving the Green Knights a 27-0 halftime advantage.

The Red Hawks (2-1, 1-1 MWC) would get on the scoreboard with just over four minutes left in the third quarter when Nathan Silloway caught his first career touchdown on a 17-yard pass from Stephen Covalt. That would be all the scoring Ripon could muster however. Tringali added a late touchdown pass for the Green Knights to complete the scoring.

Ripon, which recorded its lowest rushing output of the season with 128 yards on the ground, was led by Connor Greenwald's 37 yards on 13 carries. Covalt entered the game in relief of Tom Sawyer to throw for 53 yards and the score and rush for 32 more yards on 15 carries. Andy Krueger recorded Ripon's only sack of the day, to go along with three solo tackles.

Boockmeier led St. Norbert with 77 yards on 25 carries, while also leading the team in receiving with 85 yards on five catches and two total touchdowns. Tringali finished with 191 yards on 16-of-21 passing and three TDs.

The Red Hawks will try to rebound next weekend against Illinois College. That game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Ripon and can be seen live on http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal#.
