Red Hawks Drop Two Matches On Final Day of Ripon Invitational

The Ripon College volleyball team finished in third place out of the five teams at the Ripon Invitational over the weekend, despite dropping both their matches during the final day of competition on Saturday. The Red Hawks began the day with a four-set loss to St. Mary's (Minn.), who finished the Tournament with a 4-0 record. They followed that up with a back-and-forth battle in a five-set loss to Concordia (Wis.).

Against St. Mary's (Minn.) (12-2), the Red Hawks (8-11) dropped the first two sets, 21-25, 15-25, before winning the third 25-22 and losing the fourth, 22-25. Ripon saw three players finish the match with double-digit kills. Emily Gary, who was one of five players named to the All-Tournament Team, led the way with 13, followed by Karlye Wehner's 12 and Maddie Koster's 11. Gary and Koster also led the team with three blocks. Abbi Williamson tallied 37 assists to lead the team, while Brianne Milroy led the way with 21 digs.

In their second match of the day, Ripon defeated Concordia (Wis.) (4-11), 25-22 and 25-13 in the first two sets. The turning point came in the third where Ripon was edged 26-28 in a set that saw 10 ties and five lead changes. Concordia's momentum carried over to the fourth set, which the Falcons won 25-15 to force a fifth and deciding set. In that final frame, Concordia never trailed, eventually winning 15-13 to take home the victory. Ripon saw four players with double digit kills in the match, led by Wehner's 18. She was followed by Gary with 16, Paige Buddenhagen with 15 and Koster with 10. Williamson recorded a career-high 51 assists, which is just three shy of the 10th-most in a single match in school history. Milroy led the team with 36 digs.

The Red Hawks will now focus on Midwest Conference play, beginning with Friday night's match at Lake Forest, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. That match can be seen live on http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/ripon.portal#.
