Ripon Cruises Past Lawrence

Despite shooting 31 percent (16-52) from the field Saturday afternoon, the Ripon women's basketball team walked away with a dominant 55-34 victory at Lawrence University. That was in large part to holding the Vikings to 19 percent (9-47) shooting from the field, while also forcing 22 turnovers. That is the fewest points allowed by a Ripon women's basketball team since allowing 32 against Lawrence during the 2011-12 season.

Lawrence (3-8, 1-5 MWC) led for nine consecutive minutes during the first half, going up by as many as seven points, as Ripon (5-7, 5-2 MWC) missed its first 12 shots from the field. The Red Hawks would finally settle down late in the first half, going on a 20-2 run in a span of 11 and a half minutes to take an 11 point lead. Lawrence then scored the final four points of the half to keep themselves within reach at halftime.

Ripon quickly put the game away in the second half, going on a 19-5 run to start the period, as they took a 21 point lead with under eight minutes remaining. The Vikings could only get as close as 17 the rest of the way, as Ripon converted 12 of their 17 free throws down the stretch.

Kacie Cullen led the Red Hawks with 14 points, which included four 3-pointers. Jill VanEperen added 10 points, to go along with three steals, while Chelsea Sorbo added nine points and four rebounds off the bench. Sia Gonyo wreaked havoc on the defensive end, creating a game-high four steals. The Red Hawks finished the game shooting 33 percent (8-24) from 3-point range and 75 percent (15-20) from the free throw line, while scoring 18 points off turnovers.

Lawrence was led by a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds from Alex Deshler. Kassidy Rinehart added five points, six rebounds and two assists for the Vikings, whom converted just 1-of-8 (13 percent) from 3-point range.

The Red Hawks have now won two games in a row and currently sit in a fourth-place tie in the MWC standings. They will go for their third consecutive victory on Tuesday when they'll travel to conference-leading St. Norbert College (9-3, 6-1 MWC).
