DePERE, Wis. - The Ripon women's basketball team gave St. Norbert a game well into the second half Tuesday night, before falling to the Green Knights, 71-48. One key to the game came at the free throw line, where St. Norbert shot 88 percent (22-25), compared to just 63 percent (5-8) for the Red Hawks.
Ripon (5-8, 5-3 MWC) didn't trail for the first 10 minutes, as they scored the first four points of the contest and led by as many as six points in the early going. The lead would change hands midway through the half, as St. Norbert (10-3, 7-1 MWC) ended the half on a 14-6 run to take a 26-20 lead into halftime.
After St. Norbert opened the second half with a 3-pointer, Ripon was able to pull within four with 17 and a half minutes remaining, but that's as close as the score would get the rest of the night. The Green Knights scored the next nine points to break the game wide open and coast to victory.
The Red Hawks were led by Chelsea Sorbo's career-high 12 points off the bench. Morgan Johnson added nine points, all of which came in the first half, while Jill VanEperen, Kacie Cullen and Sia Gonyo each scored seven. Ripon turned the ball over 23 times, which resulted in 28 St. Norbert points.
Brianna Byrne led the Green Knights with 16 points off the bench, while Tasha Giese scored 10. Morgan Heim and Jill Kleiman added nine points, with Heim also posting a game-high six assists.
