Ripon Uses Balanced Attack To Defeat Cornell

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. -
The Ripon men's basketball team received a total team effort Saturday afternoon, defeating Cornell Colllege, 76-63, which moves the Red Hawks into a second place tie in the Midwest Conference standings. All 10 Ripon players that got in the game scored at least two points, with nine of them making at least one field goal. In addition to that, four of the team's five starters scored between 14 and 16 points.

The game featured 16 lead changes, with 10 of those coming in the first half. Ripon (9-5, 6-3 MWC) got off to a quick 15-8 lead seven minutes into the contest, but Cornell (6-8, 3-6 MWC) used a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game. The two teams then traded baskets for most of the final eight minutes, before a pair of Ty Ketz free throws sent the teams into halftime tied at 30.

Much like the first half, Ripon got off to a good start in the second period, beginning the half on a 10-4 run. Also like the first half, that didn't bother Cornell, who scored the next seven points to grab the lead once more. With the score tied at 47, the Red Hawks finally took the lead for good on a jumper by Kyle Loughrin with just over 10 minutes remaining. That was the beginning of nine consecutive points, as Ripon took control of the game. A Ty Sabin free throw gave the Red Hawks the first double digit lead of the game with four minutes left, as Ripon coasted to victory from there.

Ripon shot 53 percent (26-49) for the game, including 64 percent (14-22) in the second half. They were led by Brad Brooks' sixth career double-double, recording team-highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Ketz added 15 points and five boards, while Sabin posted 15 points and a team-high five assists. Loughrin finished with 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Joey Guth led Cornell with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while Reggie Greenwood added 15 points and eight assists. Nick Bobb also scored in double figures with 14. The Rams shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field, including 50 percent (15-30) in the second half.

The Red Hawks will try to build on this victory as they head into Wednesday's home game against Lawrence University. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. as the Red Hawks try to earn a season sweep of the Vikings for the second consecutive year.
