Red Hawks Defeat Lawrence In Overtime Thriller

APPLETON, Wis. - Ripon won their 2014-15 conference opener Saturday afternoon, defeating Lawrence 89-79 in overtime for their fifth consecutive win over the Vikings. Ripon shot 48 percent (27-56) from the floor, while Lawrence converted 41 percent (30-74) of their shots.

The Red Hawks didn't trail until 10 and a half minutes into the game when Ryan DePouw gave Lawrence a 12-11 lead. Ripon wouldn't lead again the rest of the half, despite tying the game on two occasions, once on a Ty Sabin 3-pointer and another time on a trio of Sabin free throws.

Lawrence took their largest lead of 12 points six minutes into the second half on another DePouw basket. Ripon then battled their way back into the game thanks to a 19-5 run in which Sabin and Kyle Loughrin combined for 13 points during that span. Jordan Stiede would give the Red Hawks a seven-point lead with four and a half minutes left in regulation, but Lawrence cut that lead to two with 30 seconds remaining. That lead disappeared altogether with eight seconds left when Lawrence's Jamie Nikitas converted on a layup to send the game to overtime.

Ripon dominated the extra period, outscoring the Vikings 15-5, as the Red Hawks never trailed in overtime. Seven of Ripon's 15 points in OT came from the free throw line.

Loughrin registered his first career double-double, scoring 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, to go along with game-highs of 12 rebounds and four steals. Sabin added a game-high 34 points, converting 9-of-18 shots from the field, 3-of-7 from 3-point range, and 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Stiede also chipped in with a career-high 15 points, while Justin Leistikow pulled down 11 boards in addition to his four points.

Lawrence was led by Nikitas' 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Trace Sonnleitner added 23 points and six boards. DePouw finished with 17 points and five rebounds. That trio combined to shoot 26-for-52 (50 percent), including seven 3-pointers.

Ripon will take next week off from competition, before getting back on the court December 3 when they'll host St. Norbert College.
