Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sabin Nets Career-High In Win Over Calvin College

RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon men's basketball team extended their season-long winning streak to four games Friday night, with an 86-80 win over Calvin College, which entered the season as the sixth-ranked team in Division-III. The Red Hawks converted 12 3-pointers on the night, which is tied for fifth in school history, while turning the ball over just five times. Four of those 12 3-pointers came from Ty Sabin, who finished with a career-high 38 points, including 22 in the second half.

The tone was set on Ripon's first possession of the game, which ended with Sabin connecting from long-range. He ended up scoring the team's first seven points, as Ripon (7-2) clung to an early lead. An Isaac Masters 3-pointer gave the Red Hawks a six-point lead with 12 and a half minutes left in the opening half, but that was quickly erased by an 8-0 Calvin run. The lead then seesawed back and forth, with a Jordan Stiede 3-pointer putting Ripon back in front with just under one minute left before halftime.

Nursing a two-point lead at the break, Ripon led for the first two minutes of the second period, before Calvin's Jordan Brink tied the game with one of his five 3-pointers. That marked one of four ties in the second half, with Calvin (5-4) never being able to pull in front. Although most of the period was played with a single-digit lead, Ripon took their largest lead of 10 with under 3 minutes remaining on a pair of free throws by Sabin. Leading by nine with 57 seconds to play, Calvin made one final attempt at a comeback, as Brink scored five points in six seconds to cut Ripon's advantage to four. Brink would score 11 of the team's final 13 points in the last two minutes, almost single handedly staging a remarkable comeback, but Ripon made 12 of their final 13 free throws, including 9-of-10 in the final minute, to secure the victory.

Sabin finished 12-of-24 from the field, including 4-of-10 from 3-point range, while also converting 10-of-11 free throws. He also added four assists, one blocked shot and one steal. Kyle Loughrin also chipped in with 18 points, five assists, and two steals, while Stiede had 10 points and a pair of steals. Justin Leistikow did the dirty work, collecting 10 rebounds, including five on the offensive end of the court. The Red Hawks shot 46 percent (27-59) in the game.

Brink led Calvin with 29 points, 22 of which came in the second half. Jordan Daley added 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Connor VanderBrug chipped in with 10 points and six boards off the bench. The Knights shot 52 percent (31-60) in the game, including 61 percent (19-31) in the second half, but turned the ball over 11 times, leading to 18 Ripon points.

The Red Hawks will try to extend their winning streak to five games on Saturday, when they'll host another MIAA school, Alma College. That game will begin at 3 p.m. and can be seen live at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.,
