Box Score 2 RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon volleyball team extended some hospitality Friday in what was the first day of the two day Red Hawks Invitational. They began the day with a comeback win over UW-River Falls in five sets, before losing to the University of Dubuque in four sets during the nightcap.
Against UW-River Falls (3-6), Ripon (10-5) lost the first two sets 25-19 and 25-23. With their backs against the wall, the Red Hawks won the third and fourth set 25-9 and 25-20, respectively, before winning the fifth set 17-15 to clinch the victory. Ripon was led by
Allison Barnes who finished with 18 kills and 14 digs, while
Katie Berrell added 13 kills.
Emily Gary also recorded double-digit kills with 12 and a team-high three blocks (two solo), while
Kelli Walsh recorded nine kills and a team-best hitting percentage of .500.
Brianne Milroy led Ripon's defense with 17 digs, while
Abbi Williamson posted 47 assists and 13 digs.
In the nightcap, Ripon and the University of Dubuque (6-10) played another tightly contested match. Dubuque won the first set 29-27, while Ripon took the second 25-15, but that would be the only set the Red Hawks would win, as Dubuque finished them off with 27-25 and 25-16 victories in the third and fourth sets, respectively. Barnes again led the Red Hawks in kills with 14, to go along with 11 digs. Berrell added 12 kills, while
Paige Buddenhagen chipped in with 11. Walsh led the team in blocks with five (two solo), while Williamson recorded a team-high 43 assists, to go along with 11 digs. Milroy again led the team in digs with a season-best 27.
Ripon will try to finish the 2014 Red Hawks Invitational on a positive note Saturday, as they'll play UW-Superior and Saint Mary's (Minn.) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, at Storzer Center in Ripon.
