RIPON, Wis. - Ripon needed 10 extra minutes to defeat Lake Forest Tuesday night, downing the Foresters 106-103 in double overtime behind a career-high 41 points by the nation's leading scorer
Ty Sabin, which is tied for 10th in school history for a single game. Nineteen of those points would come after regulation, as Sabin connected on all six of his shots during the overtime periods, including one 3-pointer, while converting all six of his free throws during the extra periods.
As good as Sabin was towards the end of the game,
Kyle Loughrin gave Ripon just as big of a boost at the start of the contest. Loughrin scored 12 points in the first five and a half minutes on 5-of-6 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers, helping the Red Hawks get out to a 14-2 lead. Ripon (10-4, 7-2 MWC) would take their largest lead of 18 points with three and a half minutes left in the first half on a 3-pointer by Sabin.
Ripon went into halftime with a 12-point lead, but Lake Forest would quickly chip away in the second half, getting that lead to single digits three minutes into the period on a 3-pointer by Andrew Toth. The Red Hawks continued to hold the Foresters at arm's length, leading by nine with nine minutes left in regulation. That lead disappeared over the next four minutes, as Lake Forest (6-8, 5-5 MWC) scored nine consecutive points to tie the score. They would take their first lead of the night on a layup by Torrey Davis with just over four minutes left in the period. Trailing by two with under 30 seconds left, Davis would strike again, tying the score at 74 with under 30 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, both teams held at least one lead. Davis gave LFC an 83-81 lead on a layup with 41 seconds left, but Ripon's
Nathan Runde tied the score again with 24 seconds left, sending the game to a second OT. That's when Sabin took the game over, scoring 15 points in the five minute period, making all four of his field goals and connecting on all six of his free throws to seal the victory.
In addition to his scoring prowess, Sabin also tied for the team lead in rebounds with five, while adding two assists. Loughrin finished with 27 points, 19 of which came in the first half, while Runde recorded 12 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting. The Red Hawks shot 58 percent (39-67) from the field, including 67 percent (20-30) in the first half.
Lake Forest had five players score in double figures, led by Davis' 23 points. Jim Schick added a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive), while Toth also scored 21 points. Brian Madson also recorded a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Mason Zuniga added 12 points, making all four of his 3-pointers. Lake Forest shot 51 percent (38-74) from the field, including 48 percent (13-27) from 3-point range.
With the win, Ripon keeps pace with the top teams in the Midwest Conference and remains in third place in the standings, just one-half game behind Monmouth College, which is where the Red Hawks will travel on Saturday. That game will begin at 3 p.m. in Monmouth, Ill. and can be seen live at
