Ripon Comeback Falls Short

RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon College women's soccer team did their best to rally from a 4-0 deficit, but time ran out on their comeback attempt, as the Red Hawks lost to St. Norbert Wednesday night by a score of 4-3. The Green Knights also held a 20-13 shot advantage, including 11-6 in the first half.

St. Norbert (11-4-2, 8-1-0 MWC) built an early lead with a trio of first half goals. They got on the board in the 15th minute on Katie Vanden Avond's conference-leading 35th goal of the season, with the assist going to Nicole Beine. One minute later Danielle Harris got into the action with her first goal of the season, on a pass from Monica Stephans. SNC added another goal in the final minute of the first half when Katherine Oleniczak scored her second of the season on a Penalty Kick.

Vanden Avond notched her second goal of the game in the 64th minute during the second half on another assist by Beine, giving SNC a 4-0 lead. That lead almost evaporated entirely thanks to a Ripon team that never gave up. Shelbi Buettner found the back of the net for the Red Hawks (7-9-1, 3-6-0 MWC) in the 74th minute on an assist from Isabella Kohl, marking Buettner's first collegiate goal. In the 88th minute, Savannah Skamra also notched the first goal of her college career, on an assist from Buettner. One minute later, Alyssa Kennedy scored her seventh goal of the season on assists from Skamra and Morgan Johnson, cutting St. Norbert's lead to a single goal, but time would run out before the Red Hawks could get another.

Jessica Bykowski played all 90 minutes in the net for the Red Hawks, making five saves. Her counterpart, Maddie Plinska also played the entire game, recording seven saves.

The Red Hawks will wrap up their season on Saturday when they'll host Illinois College at 11 a.m. on what will also be Senior Day, honoring Kennedy, Chelsey Abler, Kavanya Gray, Donna Lohse, Jamie Wegner, and Taylor Ziebol.
