RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon women's basketball team never trailed during Saturday's conference-opening game against Lawrence University, en route to a 74-57 win over the Vikings. That marks Ripon's 17th consecutive win against Lawrence and is the eighth consecutive season that Ripon has won their conference opener.
Ripon got out to a quick lead in the first quarter thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from
Emma McDonald and
Nicole Herkert on the team's first two trips down the court. Lawrence cut that lead to one later in the period, but that would be as close as the Vikings would get the rest of the night. The Red Hawks began the second quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 17-point lead and put the game out of reach thanks, in part, to shooting 55 percent (16-29) in the half.
Ripon's lead never dipped below double-digits during the final two quarters, as they dominated the paint all night, to the tune of a 46-24 scoring advantage in the lane. Ripon also outscored Lawrence 14-0 in second chance points and turned 22 Viking turnovers into 27 points on the other end.
Freshman
Maggie Oimoen led the Red Hawks in scoring for the second time in as many games, finishing with a game-high 22 points on 11-of-14 shooting, despite playing just 20 minutes off the bench.
Megan Jensen tied a career-high with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Herkert scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, in addition to four assists, three rebounds and two steals. The Red Hawks also dominated the boards, out-rebounding Lawrence by a 37-19 margin. Ripon grabbed 15 offensive rebounds in the game, while limiting the Vikings to three offensive rebounds.
Lawrence was led by Elizabeth Arco's 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists off the bench. Fanita Robins and Olivia Hoesley each added 11 points for the Vikings.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Tuesday when they'll travel to Marian University. That game will begin at 7 p.m. in Fond du Lac, Wis.
