Coach Ernst Ties MWC Record For Career Victories As Ripon Defeats Lawrence For 16th Consecutive Year

APPLETON, Wis. - For the 16th consecutive season, the Doehling-Heselton trophy will reside in Ripon, Wisconsin. The trophy, which is annually awarded to the winner of the Ripon-Lawrence game and is named for legendary Ripon and Lawrence coaches Carl Doehling and Bernie Heselton, respectively, will stay with the Red Hawks thanks to Saturday's 43-15 victory. This win had even more meaning behind it, as Ripon Head Coach Ron Ernst tied the Midwest Conference football record for career coaching victories with the 159th of his 25-year career.

Ripon (6-3, 3-2 MWC North) didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard, scoring three first quarter touchdowns to take an early 21-0 lead. Quarterback Grifin McNeal scored the first two TDs, punching it in from four and one yards. McNeal then connected with Nathan Silloway on a 51-yard pass for the Red Hawks's third score.

McNeal added his third rushing touchdown of the game with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter, before Lawrence (1-8, 0-5 MWC North) got on the board on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Butterfield to Terrence Simon. Ripon added another score just before halftime when Connor Greenwald scored on a 46-yard run. After Bradley Knoblock converted the two point conversion to Silloway, Ripon took a 36-8 lead into the locker room.

Greenwald added a second touchdown run from four yards out to cap the first drive of the second half. Lawrence would score once more on another touchdown pass from Butterfield to Simon, but the damage was already done.

Ripon outgained Lawrence in total offensive yards, 521-258, while also holding the advantage in rushing yards (404-122). The Red Hawks also gained 8.1 yards per play, including 7.1 yards per carry. Greenwald led Ripon with 136 yards on 13 carries (10.5 ypc), leaving him less than 100 yards shy of the sixth-highest total in school history. McNeal added 98 yards on 15 carries (6.5 ypc), while completing 4-of-6 passes for 117 yards. Nathan Kuehl added 78 yards on eight carries (9.8 ypc), while also catching two passes for 53 yards. Silloway led the Red Hawks with 64 receiving yards on two catches.

Defensively, Ripon recorded two interceptions, with one coming from both Knoblock and Dakotah Kirchenwitz. Knoblock now has seven interceptions on the year, which ties him for 10th in school history for a single season. Jordan Remsza recorded a team-high 11 tackles (10 solo).

Lawrence was led by Donnel Haley's 74 yards on 12 carries (6.2 ypc). Butterfield completed 10-of-20 passes for 124 yards, while Corey Fisher led the Vikings in receiving with four catches for 37 yards.

The Red Hawks will conclude their 2015 season next weekend when they'll square off with Lake Forest College. That game will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon and can be seen live at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
