RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's women's basketball team was outscored by just three points during the final three quarters of Saturday's game against Cornell College. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks fell into a 22-7 deficit after the first quarter, as Cornell used that early lead to coast to a 61-43 victory.
Cornell (4-2, 2-1 MWC) never trailed in the game, as they took control of the game early, scoring the first six points of the day.
Emma McDonald cut that lead in half with a 3-pointer for Ripon's first points of the game, but Cornell proceeded to score the next seven points, which was the beginning of a 16-4 run to end the quarter. Ripon (3-2, 1-2 MWC) cut Cornell's lead to seven mid-way through the second quarter, but the Rams ended that period on a 10-4 lead to take a 13-point lead to the locker room.
Cornell led by double digits for the entirety of the second half, with Ripon getting as close as 10 during the fourth quarter. Ripon finished the game shooting 31 percent (18-58) from the field, while Cornell shot 39 percent (22-57) from the floor.
Ripon was led by McDonald and
Nicole Herkert, whom each scored nine points. McDonald made a game-high three 3-pointers and pulled down six rebounds, while Herkert added five rebounds and three assists.
Maggie Oimoen added eight points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
Diamond Boyd led Cornell with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds (four offensive), while also recording five steals. Kellie Kuzmanic added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Maggie Hogen and Sierra Bisso each scored 10.
The Red Hawks will look to bounce back on Tuesday against Beloit College. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Ripon.
