Ripon Bats Come Alive In Wins Over Bethel And UW-River Falls

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Ripon softball team earned their first victories of the season Tuesday afternoon, defeating Bethel in a nail biter, 7-6, before topping UW-River Falls by a score of 8-5. The Red Hawks recorded 16 hits in the two games combined, and never trailed in the day's 14 innings.

Against Bethel (4-5), the Red Hawks (2-4) didn't waste any time, scoring twice in the top of the first when
Meg Krautsch and Ashley Gnacinski delivered back-to-back home runs with two outs in the inning. Bethel got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first, but Ripon added a run in the second and another in the third on a Haylea Hoskins single and Ashley Parkkonen double, respectively.

The Red Hawks opened the game up in the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits and one error. Hoskins drove in
Tene Robinson with another single, while Stephanie Cartwright scored on a double steal, and a Krautsch ground out scored Hoskins from third. That 7-1 lead would be challenged however, as Bethel rallied in the fourth with five runs on three hits and one error, leaving the bases loaded as the final out of the inning was retired.

Hoskins, Robinson, and Parkkonen led Ripon with two hits apiece, while Hoskins and Krautsch each drove in a pair of runs. Seven different Red Hawks scored a run in the win. Gnacinski  earned the win, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, while allowing four hits and striking out two, including the last batter of the game with runners on second and third.

Ripon followed that win up with another against UW-River Falls (7-7), as the Red Hawks again struck first with a run in the first inning, which came via a Gnacinski single. The Red Hawks added five runs on three hits the following inning, which featured an RBI double by Cartwright, an RBI single by
Korrine Peterson, and three runs scoring on a UW-River Falls error.

The Red Hawks took a seven-run lead in the fourth when Gnacinski drove in Peterson with a single. UW-River Falls then got on the board with three runs in the sixth, but Ripon would add another in the sixth when Krautsch doubled to center, allowing Peterson to score. UW-River Falls put another rally together in the seventh, scoring two runs, but it was not enough, leaving one runner on base.

Peterson, Krautsch, and Gnacinski each finished the game with two hits, while Peterson scored a game-high three runs and Gnacinski led the Red Hawks with two RBI. Gnacinski (2-1) also picked up her second win of the day, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and striking out five in her seven innings of work.

The Red Hawks will have Wednesday off, before getting back on the field Thursday when they'll face Bodoin and Carleton at 5 and 7 p.m. ET, respectively. Those games will be played at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla.
