Ripon Defeats Greenville, 11-7

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - In their only game of the day Wednesday, the Ripon College baseball team defeated Greenville College, 11-7, in what was a see-saw battle.

Ripon (3-4) struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, scoring both runs on Nick Schmitt's second double of the season. Greenville cut that lead in half with a run in the third, as they plated a run on an RBI triple. The Panthers would take their first lead of the game in the fourth when they scored on a lead off home run and an RBI single.

That lead didn't last long, with Ripon going back in front in the bottom of the fourth when Nick Kita drove in a pair of runs with a double of his own. The following inning saw Greenville tie the score at four, only to see Ripon take the lead yet again on an RBI single off the bat of Michael Polcyn.

A two-run triple by Greenville in the top of the sixth gave the Panthers the lead again, but Ripon exploded for six runs on four hits and two Greenville errors in the bottom of that frame. The big blow in that inning came from Schmidt, who delivered a three-run triple, to give the Red Hawks some breathing room. Greenville added one more run in the seventh, but couldn't get any closer.

All but one player in Ripon's starting lineup recorded at least one hit, with Schmitt leading the way by going 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Kita and Josh Oswald also registered multi-hit games, with two hits apiece. Kita and Polcyn each finished with two RBI. Michael Anderson (2-0) earned the win, allowing six earned runs on eight hits, while striking out two in six innings of work.

The Red Hawks will be in action again on Thursday, when they'll play a doubleheader against St. Olaf College. The first game of that twinbill will begin at 9:15 a.m. ET at Lake Myrtle Park Field One.
