Red Hawks Battle Through Pair of Close Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - Ripon lost a pair of tightly contested games Friday afternoon, falling to D'Youville and Macalester by scores of 10-8 and 8-7, respectively. Just when they thought their day was done, they picked up where they left off in last night's suspended contest against Carleton, dropping that game by a 10-2 score in six innings.

In their first game of the day, the Red Hawks (2-8) fell behind early, allowing six runs on five hits and two errors in the top of the first. They were able to cut that lead in half in the bottom of that frame when Meg Krautsch crushed a pitch over the left field wall for a three-run homer, her second of the season.

The two teams traded runs in the third, before D'Youville (2-2) scored twice more in the fourth. As they would do for most of the day, Ripon kept pace, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of that inning on an RBI single from Desiree Velazquez and a pair of bases loaded walks.

Ripon cut D'Youville's lead to one with a run in the bottom of the fifth when they scored on a fielding error. D'Youville added an insurance run in the seventh, which Ripon couldn't overcome.

The Red Hawks left 10 runners on base, including nine in the final four innings combined. Krautsch led Ripon with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, to go along with a game-high four RBI and one run scored. Jessica Kobelt and Tene Robinson also registered two hits apiece, while Velazquez drove in two runs. Kobelt and Ashley Parkkonen combined to strike out nine batters in the game.

Their second game was even closer than the first, although it began in similar fashion. Macalester (8-5) took the game's first lead with a four-run first inning, but that was answered with four Ripon runs in the top of the second, which included RBIs from Stephanie Cartwright and Krautsch.

The two teams waited until the fourth to score again when Macalester put one across the plate. Ripon then took their first lead of the day in the sixth, scoring a trio of runs on an error, an RBI single by Haylea Hoskins, and a run-scoring double off the bat of Ashley Gnacinski. That lead was short-lived however, as Macalester scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning and held the Red Hawks scoreless in the seventh to secure the victory.

Gnacinski and Cartwright led the Red Hawks with two hits apiece, while Cartwright also scored a team-high two runs. Gnacinski took the tough-luck loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and striking out one in six innings.

In the continuation of Ripon's suspended game from Thursday night, Carleton (3-3) scored once in the fifth and another time in the sixth to earn the 10-2 victory in six innings. Parkkonen led the Red Hawks with two of the team's four hits, while Hoskins recorded Ripon's only RBI. Parkkonen also pitched well in relief, allowing just one run and striking out four in 4.2 innings.

The Red Hawks' 2015 Spring Trip will come to an end on Saturday when they'll face Elmhurst and Carthage at 1 and 5 p.m. ET, respectively. Both games will be played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
