Ripon Completes Series Sweep Over Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. -,One day after sweeping a doubleheader against Lawrence University, the Ripon baseball team defeated the Vikings twice more, winning 5-4 and 14-3 on Sunday afternoon. The wins give the Red Hawks a five-game winning streak and puts them one win away from clinching both a Midwest Conference Tournament spot and the number one seed in the MWC North Division.

In their first game against Lawrence (10-21, 2-14 MWC North), the Red Hawks (15-12, 10-2 MWC North) struck first with a run in the top of the second on an RBI triple by Mitchell Busch. Ripon added three more in the third on RBI singles by Nick Kita and Michael Polcyn and a sacrifice fly from Nate Siudak.

Lawrence got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Ripon got one of those runs back in the sixth when Nate Siudak singled home Siudak. Lawrence would add two more runs in the eighth, but Jeff Schuurmans came on in relief to strike out the only batter he faced in the inning, leaving a runner stranded at first.

Schuurmans then pitched a one-hit ninth to record his second save of the season. Matt Hecht (2-4) earned the victory, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out six in six innings of work. At the plate, Ripon was led by Kita, Busch, and Nick Schmitt, whom recorded two hits apiece. Ripon finished with 11 hits, with each of the first eight batters in the order recording at least one base knock.

The day's second game saw Ripon rack up 20 more hits, highlighted by a trio of home runs, as Uhen connected on his second of the season and Polcyn belted his second and third of the year.

Lawrence scored first, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but that would be their only lead of the contest. Ripon pulled ahead with a three-run third, before adding another run in the sixth, one in the seventh, three in the eighth, and six in the ninth.

In addition to his home run, Uhen also hit his fifth double of the season, finishing 4-for-5 with a game-high five RBI and scoring two runs. Siudak also recorded four hits, while scoring three runs. Dakotah Kirchenwitz and Jake Reinke added three hits apiece, while Polcyn and Schmitt each finished with two.,Aaron Langdon (2-0) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Ripon will try to keep things rolling on Wednesday when they'll travel up Highway 44 for a battle with the Titans of UW-Oshkosh. That game will begin at 4 p.m. in Oshkosh, Wis.
