GALESBURG, Ill. - Ripon scored their most single game points in two years Saturday afternoon, defeating Knox College 96-69 to earn their fifth win in the last six games. The Red Hawks dominated the game for most of the day, breaking a 35-year-old record for most rebounds in a single game, pulling down 77 rebounds to surpass the previous record by two. Ripon also shot 49 percent (40-82) from the field, while holding the Prairie Fire to just 27 percent (24-89) shooting, including 16 percent (7-45) from 3-point range.
After
Nicole Herkert gave Ripon an early lead with a basket on the game's opening possession, Knox scored the next seven points. The Prairie Fire would hold the lead until the six and a half minute mark in the first quarter when
Mikayla Hartman tied the score at nine.
Maggie Oimoen then gave Ripon the lead with a jumper of her own and the Red Hawks never looked back. With an eight-point lead after one quarter, Ripon added to their lead in the second period, taking an 18-point lead on a three-point play by Oimoen in the final seconds before halftime.
Ripon would coast to victory in the second half, leading by double digits for the entirety of the third and fourth quarters and leading by as many as 30 points. Ripon's bench outscored Knox's reserves 54-15, while 11 different players scored for the Red Hawks.
Oimoen led Ripon with her first career double-double, recording career-highs of 26 points and 15 rebounds (six offensive) in just 14 minutes, to go along with a career-best three assists. Herkert also notched a double-double, the fourth of her career, with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Megan Jensen added 11 points and a career-high six assists, while Hartman and
Eleanore Mueller each scored 10 points.
Jonalee Elliott was also active on the boards, setting a new career-high with 13 rebounds (six offensive), to go along with six points, two assists and three blocked shots.
Knox was led by a 15-point effort by Karlie Thorn, while Jamie Blue added 14 points and seven rebounds. Saundra Gavazzi and Naja Woods added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
With the win, Ripon moves into second place in the MWC standings. They will be in action again Wednesday when they'll travel to Carroll University. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Waukesha, Wis. and can be seen live atÂ
