RIPON, Wis. - Macalester College rained on Ripon's Homecoming parade Saturday afternoon, defeating the Red Hawks 16-8 in a game that featured just 511 yards of total offense between the two teams. Turnovers played a key role in the outcome, as Ripon lost two fumbles and threw a pair of interceptions, with Macalester turning it over once.
Neither team scored in the first half, as Ripon extended their shutout streak against Macalester to six quarters. The Scots finally got on the board with 11 minutes left in the third period on a 26-yard field goal by Ben Haltmaier. The Scots added the game's first touchdown on their next possession when quarterback Cody Petrich found pay-dirt from two yards out. Macalester added two more field goals from 34 and 21 yards, respectively, to take a 16-0 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Ripon showed they had no quit in them, cutting that lead in half with two and a half minutes to play on a 35-yard touchdown pass from
Griffin McNeal to
Cameron Mignone, which was followed by a two-point conversion by
Austin Bunders. Macalester was then able to run out the clock to earn the victory.
Ripon finished with 236 yards of total offense, including 129 through the air and 107 on the ground.
Cody Chase led the Red Hawks with 34 rushing yards, while McNeal completed 6-of-14 passes for 121 yards, but was sacked six times. Ripon's defense did some sacking of its own, as
Vince Stensrud recorded three all by himself.
Ethan Hoffman led all players with 12 tackles, while
Patrick Barany intercepted a pass in the end zone towards the end of the first half to end a Macalester scoring threat.
The Scots were led by Jeremy Stephan's 62 yards on 13 carries. Petrich completed 11-of-29 passes for 145 yards, while adding 20 more yards on the ground.
Ripon will try to put Saturday's game behind them and turn their focus to next weekend when they'll travel to Lake Forest College. That game will begin Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lake Forest, Ill. and can be seen live atÂ
