Ripon Can't Overcome Early Deficit

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's football team fell behind by 17 points early in the third quarter Saturday afternoon, which proved to be a lead they could not overcome, as the Red Hawks lost to Beloit by a final score of 24-14. Despite losing by 10 points, Ripon was only out-gained by the Buccaneers by 30 total yards (334-304). This marks Beloit's first win in the series since 2005, snapping a 10-game losing streak against the Red Hawks.

Beloit (3-4, 2-3 MWC) scored the first points of the game in the final minute of the first quarter when Kam Sallee connected on a 19-yard field goal. They would add a touchdown with 10 minutes left in the half when Danny May found Michael Nolden for a 24-yard score to cap a four-play, 80-yard drive.

Nolden found the end zone again on the first drive of the second half, catching a 33-yard pass from May. Ripon answered that with an 11-play, 88-yard drive that ate up nearly six minutes and was capped by an eight-yard run by Samuel Shroyer. Three minutes later, Nolden found the end zone for a third time, this time from 43 yards out. Ripon cut the lead to 10 mid-way through the final quarter on a 12-yard run by Cody Chase, but it was too little, too late.

Ripon more than doubled Beloit's rushing yards, gaining 281 yards on the ground, while averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Shroyer led all players with a career-high 131 yards on 28 carries, while Chase added 82 yards on 13 totes (6.3 ypc). Defensively, Patrick Barany helped spur a late comeback, recording six tackles and his team-leading third interception of the season.

Beloit was led by Nolden's three catches for 100 yards, each of which went for a touchdown. May completed 11-of-17 passes for 196 yards, while Mason Dixon led the Buccaneers with 83 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Ripon will try to right the ship next weekend when they'll travel to St. Norbert College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in De Pere, Wis. and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/#live.
