Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Red Hawks Hang On For Win At Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - One day after winning a game which saw them erase a 12-point second half deficit, the Ripon men's basketball team almost got a taste of their own medicine, as they held on for an 80-73 victory at Cornell in a game that saw them hold an 18-point lead at one point. Ripon shot 54 percent (28-52) from the field, while making 50 percent (7-14) of their 3-pointers and converting 85 percent (17-20) of their free throws.

After the lead changed hands a few times in the opening minutes, Ripon (4-0, 2-0 MWC) used a 15-3 run to take a 14-point lead with four and a half minutes left in the half. Ty Sabin hit a jumper late in the period for the Red Hawks to put them up by 17, but Cornell's Keegan Van Kooten drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut Ripon's lead to 39-25 at the break.

Ripon's largest lead of the game came with 12 and a half minutes remaining when Cal Schultz connected on a 3-pointer to put the Red Hawks up by 18. Cornell (3-2, 1-1 MWC) then went on a 26-9 run, which was keyed by six Ram 3-pointers, to cut Ripon's lead to a single point with four minutes to play. That's as close as Cornell would get the rest of the way, as Schultz scored the game's next five points, keeping the Rams at arm's length for the remainder of the game.

Sabin finished with team-highs of 33 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists for his first career double-double. That also gives Sabin more than 1,900 career points, making him the first player in program history to accomplish that feat. Schultz finished with 13 points off the bench, making all three of his 3-pointers, while Brendan McCoy added 10 points, all of which came in the first half.

Cornell was led by Corey Davis, who produced a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, in addition to a team-high two steals. Grant Anderson' added 21 points and five rebounds, going 6-for-12 from behind the arc, while Jan Siegien and Jon Anderson scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Ripon will try to remain undefeated on Wednesday when they'll travel to Beloit College. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Beloit, Wis. and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
