MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - In what was arguably the greatest single game performance by a player in Ripon College men's basketball history,
Ty Sabin saved his best for last. The junior guard converted a school-record 11 3-pointers in the game, the last of which came as time expired in overtime, giving Ripon a 78-77 victory at Cornell. That final basket gave Sabin 51 points, which sets a new school record for a single game, breaking the previous mark of 48, and is 10 more than his previous career-high.
As hot as Sabin was throughout much of the game, Ripon (13-7, 11-4 MWC) couldn't get many baskets to fall early on. After scoring the first two points of the contest, Ripon allowed Cornell (7-12, 5-9 MWC) to go on an 11-2 run. The Red Hawks would fall behind by 10 points mid-way through the first half before Sabin began to heat up, scoring the game's next 12 points on four consecutive 3-pointers to give Ripon their first lead since the opening minute. Cornell would score on each of their next possessions, but each time Sabin answered with a 3-pointer at the other end, finishing the first half with six triples, which helped Ripon take a 38-33 lead into halftime.
The Red Hawks held a lead in the second half until just over one minute remained in regulation as Grant Anderson gave Cornell a two-point lead. That was answered by who else, Ty Sabin, with a jumper to tie the game at 64 with 48 seconds to play. Cornell failed to score on the ensuing possession, giving Sabin a chance to win in regulation, but his jumper bounced off the rim, sending the game to overtime and delaying his heroics for five minutes.
Sabin scored nine of Ripon's 14 points in overtime, but possibly the biggest shot came from
Brendan McCoy, who drained a 3-pointer from the corner with one minute on the clock, cutting Cornell's lead to two. After Cornell failed to score on the next possession, Sabin drove to the hoop for a three-point play, giving Ripon their first lead of overtime with 29 seconds left. Cornell then made three free throws to take a two-point lead with three seconds to play, setting the stage for one of the biggest shots of Sabin's career, sinking a 30-footer at the buzzer, giving Ripon the win and sending players and fans alike into a frenzy.
Sabin finished the game shooting 18-for-36, including 11-for-18 from 3-point range. His 51 points puts him over 500 this season, making him just the fourth player in program history to reach that milestone in more than one season. He also moved into second-place in school history for career 3-pointers with 184.
Elliot Hoerdemann was second on the team with 10 points, while McCoy scored seven, to go along with five rebounds and three assists. The Red Hawks tied a school record with 15 3-pointers, shooting 47 percent (15-32) from downtown.
Cornell was led by Corey Davis' 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Brad Hund turned in a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards, while Anderson added 24 points and eight rebounds. The Rams shot just 17 percent (3-18) from 3-point range.
The win keeps Ripon in third place in the MWC standings. They will be in action again next Saturday when they'll host Illinois College for what will be Ripon's annual Alumni Day celebration. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Storzer Center. Ripon's Men's Alumni Game will begin at 9 a.m. and is open to the public.
