Red Hawks Fall At Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Cornell scored 19 points off 21 Ripon turnovers, helping them defeat the Red Hawks 67-50 on Saturday afternoon. Ripon shot 33 percent (18-54) from the field, while Cornell made 34 percent (21-61) of their shots.

Ripon's only lead of the game came in the opening minutes of the first quarter, leading by as many as four in the early going. That lead evaporated mid-way through the quarter thanks to a 10-2 Cornell run. The Rams took a double-digit lead in the second quarter, before going into halftime with a seven-point advantage.

Cornell built an 11-point lead in the third quarter, but that was cut to six mid-way through the quarter thanks to a 9-4 run that was capped by a Nicole Herkert jumper. After the Rams built another double-digit lead later in the quarter, Emma McDonald drained a 3-pointer to cut that lead to eight entering the final frame. Cornell then pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Red Hawks 15-6.

Herkert led the Red Hawks with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Eleanore Mueller recorded 10 points and four rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Jonalee Elliott led Ripon's defensive effort with four blocked shots, giving her 58 for her career, which is just one shy of the third-highest total in school history.

Cornell was led by a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds by Maggie Hogen. Kellie Kuzmanic added 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals, while Mackenzie Teut scored 10 points off the bench. Diamond Boyd added eight points, 11 rebounds and five steals.

The Red Hawks will be in action again next Saturday when they'll host Illinois College on what will also be Ripon's annual Alumni Day celebration. That game will begin at 3 p.m. at Storzer Center. The Women's Alumni Game will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is open to the public.
