AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Ripon lost to Suffolk University Wednesday afternoon by a score of 14-2 in seven innings, with half of Suffolk's runs coming in the sixth inning alone.
After two scoreless innings, Suffolk (6-2) took the first lead of the game with a five-run third inning. Ripon (1-6) got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third when
Brice Swick singled home fellow freshman Michael Barnes.Â
Suffolk added two more runs in the fourth before their explosion in the sixth. Ripon's only other run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth when
Nick Schmitt deposited the ball over the left field wall for his first home run of the season and 16th of his career, which is tied for 10th in school history.
Schmitt and
Isiah Ramos each finished with two of Ripon's seven hits.
Matt Hecht (0-1) suffered the loss, despite striking out seven batters in 5.1 innings.
Suffolk was led by lead-off hitter Brady Chant, who went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Rob Marks also scored three runs, while going 3-for-4 at the dish. Chuck Gibson (1-0) earned the complete game victory, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out six without walking anyone.
