AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Ripon's baseball team started Thursday's slate of games a lot better than they finished it.
Randy Finger hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat RPI 4-3 early in the afternoon, but that was followed by a 7-0 loss to Benedictine (Ill.).
In their first game of the day, Ripon (2-7) took a two-run lead in the second inning thanks to RBI singles by
Michael Barnes and
Jake Reinke. That lead was cut in half when Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1-11) scored a run in the top of the eighth. RPI added two more in the ninth to take their first lead of the contest, but
Josh Oswald came up clutch for the Red Hawks in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single up the middle, scoring
Nick Schmitt from third. That set the stage for Finger's heroics in the 10th, connecting on a one-out single to right field to score
Cullen Oren for the winning run.
Ripon recorded 12 hits in the game, led by Finger's 3-for-4 performance.
Isiah Ramos, Oswald and Reinke each finished with two hits. Ryan Maier (1-0) earned the win, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings of relief, while striking out one without walking a batter.
RPI finished with 10 hits, led by two apiece from Sam Lawrence and Ethann Meister. Greg Echeverria (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on 11 hits and striking out five in 9.1 innings of work.
Ripon's second game of the day didn't go as well, as Benedictine (1-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back. They tacked on another in the sixth and two more in the eighth for the 7-0 victory.
The Red Hawks finished with two hits, coming from Ramos and
Brice Swick.
David Knapp (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on 11 hits in six innings, while striking out five and walking one.
Benedictine registered 15 hits, with Chayanze Stirbis, Tanner Kiser and Nicholas Quick each finishing with three. Joe Palasiewicz (1-0) earned the complete game shutout, striking out six batters and walking just one.
Ripon will complete their Spring Trip on Friday against McDaniel College at 1 p.m. ET. That game will be played at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
