RIPON, Wis. - Ripon and St. Norbert each entered Tuesday's doubleheader still in search of their first victory of the season. Neither team will have to search any longer, as the two teams split the pair of games with St. Norbert winning game one 7-4 and Ripon taking the second game 4-2.
The first game was tightly contested for the first several innings with St. Norbert (1-13, 1-5 MWC) breaking a scoreless tie with a solo home run to center field by Amanda Van Handel. The Green Knights would add three more runs the following inning, all of which came on another home run, this time by Tia Danforth.
St. Norbert extended their lead to seven with three more runs in the top of the seventh. Ripon (1-17, 1-5 MWC) then attempted to stage a two-out comeback in the bottom of the final inning.
Casey O'Malley scored on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI single by
Lexi Reetz and a two-run single by
Melanie Kobelt, but that wasn't enough.
Ripon finished with nine hits, with two apiece coming from Reetz and Kobelt. Reetz (0-7) also suffered the loss in the circle, allowing five earned runs and striking out three in her seven innings.
St. Norbert recorded 11 hits, with four players registering more than one base knock. Lexi LeCalsey (1-4) earned the win, allowing zero earned runs and striking out five in seven innings.
The day's second game saw Ripon lead from start to finish. They scored twice in the bottom of the first on RBI from Kobelt and
Elizabeth Floodstrand, before adding another run on a Kobelt single in the third. The Red Hawks took a four-run lead when Kobelt struck again with her first collegiate homer, a solo shot to dead center field that bounced off the top of the fence and over.
St. Norbert scored their only runs in the top of the seventh, but
Ashley Parkkonen (1-4) got out of the jam, recording the final out with two runners in scoring position to finish off her complete game victory.
Parkkonen didn't allow an earned run, while scattering just four hits and striking out five in her seven innings. Kobelt finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI.
St. Norbert was led by a two-hit effort from Megan Yeo. Francesca Marrese (0-7) suffered the loss, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out three in four innings.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll travel to Lake Forest College. That doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. in Lake Forest, Ill.
