APPLETON, Wis. - Ripon continued their recent dominance over Lawrence during game one of Saturday's baseball doubleheader, defeating the Vikings for their 14th consecutive win in the series. That streak would come to an end in the second game however, as Lawrence managed a 13-6 victory for their first win against Ripon since 2012.
The Red Hawks (4-17, 2-4 MWC) never trailed in the day's first game, breaking a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the second, scoring on a sac fly off the bat of
Josh Oswald and a bases loaded walk issued to
Nick Schmitt. Ripon added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double from
Nick Taranto and a sac fly from
Randy Finger, before building a 5-0 lead in the fifth on a
Michael Barnes sac fly. Lawrence (7-10, 1-1 MWC) attempted a comeback with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late, as the Vikings left two runners on base when the final out was recorded.
Ripon finished with 10 hits, with two apeice coming from Schmitt,
Nick Kita and
Bradley Knoblock.
Drew Slade (1-3) earned the victory, pitching eight scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight batters.
Lawrence recorded eight hits, with half of those coming off the bat of Matthew Holliday. Chris Shaw (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out 10 in 6.2 innings of work.
The second game saw Lawrence build an early lead and never look back. The Vikings scored once in both the second and third innings, before Ripon got on the board in the fourth on a sac fly by
Riley Erickson. Lawrence would get that run back in the bottom of the inning, before adding five more on two hits and four Ripon errors in the fifth frame.
Ripon battled back in the sixth with two runs coming on an Oswald home run down the left field line, but Lawrnece answered with two more runs in the bottom of that inning. The Red Hawks would score three more runs on an RBI single by Kita and a two-run double by
Robbie Schuettpelz, but it wasn't enough to overcome Lawrence's offensive outburst.
Schuettpelz led Ripon's 13-hit attack with a 4-for-4 game at the dish, while Erickson and Knoblock each added two hits.
Matt Hecht (0-4) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits and striking out three in 4.2 innings of work.
Lawrence finished the second game with 14 hits, with three coming from Nolan Spencer. Holliday (3-0) picked up the win, allowing four runs on 11 hits in seven innings.
