Game Recap: Baseball |

Red Hawks Split With Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team began Saturday on a positive note with a 5-2 win against Carroll University. The day didn't end as well however, as the Red Hawks dropped the nightcap 10-5, snapping a 14-game winning streak against the Pioneers, which began in the 2012 season.

After the first couple innings were scoreless, Ripon kicked off the scoring with three runs in the top of the third, which included RBI from Nick Schmitt and Nick Taranto. After Carroll got on the board with a run in the bottom of that inning, the Pioneers added another in the fifth, but that's all the scoring they would do in the game. Ripon tacked on an insurance run in the sixth and seventh on home runs by Bradley Knoblock and Josh Oswald.

Ripon finished with 12 hits, led by Nick Kita who went 4-for-5 from the lead-off spot. Drew Slade earned the win, allowing just one earned run on five hits and striking out six in eight inning of work. Ryan Maier picked up the save, allowing one hit and striking out one as he slammed the door in the ninth.

The second game of the day began slowly, but quickly picked up. Ripon broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when Schmitt connected on his fifth home run of the season and 20th of his career to move into seventh place in school history. That lead didn't last long, as Carroll scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Hawks would tie the game in the following inning on Michael Barnes' first collegiate home run, but Carroll again took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Randy Finger and Taranto each drove in a run in the next inning to give Ripon the lead once more, and Knoblock homered to lead off the seventh, making the score 5-3. That lead disappeared in the bottom of the seventh, which saw Carroll score seven runs on six hits, with the big blow being a three-run double.

Ripon's seven hits came from six different players, led by Finger's two base hits. David Knapp suffered the loss, allowing six runs and striking out two in six innings of work.

The Red Hawks will have the opportunity to redeem themselves on Sunday when they'll host Carroll for the final two games of the series. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. in Ripon, with LiveStats available at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
