BELOIT, Wis. - Ripon dropped both games of a doubleheader Sunday at Beloit College, losing game one 5-3, before dropping the second game 8-4.
The Red Hawks (2-28, 2-12 MWC) out-hit Beloit (7-23, 3-11 MWC) in the first game, 9-5, which helped them get out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Both runs scored on a double to left field off the bat of
Melanie Kobelt. That lead didn't last long, as Beloit scored four runs in the bottom of that frame, with three of those coming on a bases loaded double to right center field. Beloit added another run in the fifth. Ripon answered with a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout, but their rally ended with two runners on when the final out was recorded.
Ripon was led by
Lexi Reetz and
Casey O'Malley, who each went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Kobelt got a hit in both of her at-bats. Reetz (1-11) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits, while tying a career-high with nine strikeouts.
The second game saw Ripon again score first, plating two runs in the top of the first. Reetz scored the first run on a passed ball, while
Tene Robinson scored the other on a sac fly from Kobelt. Beloit would answer with two runs of their own to tie the score in the bottom of the first on a double to left center.
The score remained tied until the fifth inning when Beloit scored five runs on two hits. Ripon added two runs in the following inning on RBI from Reetz and
Renee Packer, but that was not enough to overcome the Buccaneer's big inning.
Ripon's five hits came from five different players.
Ashley Parkkonen (1-8) suffered the loss, striking out four in 4.1 innings of work.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll host Lawrence University. That doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. at Tracy Field in Ripon.
